Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast, Italy, with Viaggi Elite

The Amalfi Coast is Italy’s most scenic stretch of coastline, located on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Southern Italy. In 1997 it was listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape.

With its Mediterranean climate of warm summers and mild winters, it’s a popular tourist destination and attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is in its popular small towns – including Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano, and Ravello – that you can experience authentic local Italian life-style.

Amalfi is a unique place, where history merges with natural landscapes of distinctive beauty. It is characterized by breath-taking views of the Gulf, sea cliffs and ancient traditions.

Sorrento is still a civilized old town, with many fine old shops specialising in ceramics, lacework and intarsio (marquetry items). Sorrento is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area.

Positano is the coast’s most picturesque town, with houses of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta colours colouring the steep cliffs down to the sea. Its inclined streets and steps are a riot of colour, with wisteria-draped hotels, ‘chic’ restaurants and fashionable boutiques.

Ravello sits high in the hills above Amalfi, and is a refined, polished town which has become increasingly popular as a wedding venue. It is known for its magnificent gardens and breathtaking views. Every Tuesday morning, there is a lively street market in Piazza Duomo where you’ll find wine, mozzarella and olive oil, as well as designer clothing at excellent prices.

The famous Island of Capri is a fascinating location. The sea below is very deep, and harsh jagged caves line its edges. The most famous of these caves is the “Grotta Azzurra” (Blue Grotto) which was discovered by the Roman emperors.

The Amalfi Coast is known for its production of limoncello liqueur. The area is a known cultivator of lemons, which are grown in terraced gardens along the entire coast. Other renowned local products are their anchovies (“alici”) and the colourful handmade ceramics from Vietri.
